Design Matters – Integrated Visions: 15th April 9-10am, Slug & Lettuce, Bath
How can you work better with creative partners? How do you bring other companies’ and people’s skills together to create a single, powerful, integrated outcome?
For this special Design Matters, we’ve asked Gavin Thompson, the Head of Strategic Development of world-renowned design engineers Buro Happold, to talk about “Integrated Visions”.
Really good design in the built environment is tough. It flows from the delicate balance of client, architect, engineer and contractor working closely together to achieve a greater outcome than any could do on their own. Different people, different disciplines, different academic specialism’s, even different understanding of legal issues: the key is careful collaboration.
Using the stories behind projects which range from small sculptural installations through to the 2012 Olympics, Gavin will explore how balance can be achieved in practice. The session will appeal to any designers engaged in projects which rely on teamwork amongst a range of specialists. Anyone working with creative partners can learn much from this.
Gavin is a Chartered Engineer and his twenty five years with international engineering consultancy Buro Happold have seen his interests extend right across the built environment living and working in many countries. A true passion for design in its broadest sense flows through Gavin’s work, coupled with a deep technical interest in the nuts and bolts and analysis and design. He is currently pioneering the development of rapid optioneering techniques for low emission building and community design.
