Can Bath Spa University students help your organisation?

JustV is Bath Spa Students’ Union’s volunteer department.  Our role is to encourage and support students to volunteer with local charities and organisations so that not only can they broaden their horizons and gain new skills, but also make a positive contribution to the communities of Bath and the local area.

I’m currently putting together a programme of one-off, one-day activities for students to take part in (known as ‘Quickies’).  Is there anything we could do to help your organisation out?  We usually get a team of 6-12 students together and previously we’ve done activities such as decorating meeting rooms, gardening, marshaling at events, getting mail-shots prepared and building animal shelters.

For many of the students this could be their first experience of volunteering and so we always bring a group leader from the Students’ Union who can encourage them to get chatting amongst themselves and ensure that they’re happy and feeling confident with their tasks.  We also provide transport for the students and give them a packed lunch for the day.  We hope that you’d be able to provide any necessary tools and equipment, plan and risk assess the activities and think through how the volunteers should be organised (working in pairs/groups etc) (although we’d be very happy to help with this if necessary).

Many students are inspired by this taster of volunteering and we have many examples of where people taking part in a Quickie have gone back to volunteer with the organisation on a regular basis.  If you’re able to spend a few minutes at the start or end of the day to let the students know about your organisation they really appreciate it, and you may find that you recruit longer-term volunteers in return!

We don’t have a volunteering society, or a bank of volunteers as we like the opportunities to be as accessible as possible to all students.  Therefore, we usually need approximately a month’s notice so we can publicise the Quickies widely.  I’m currently looking for activities from late October to early December, but we’ll also be running lots of sessions after Christmas too.

If you think Bath Spa volunteers could help your organisation through taking part in a Quickie I’d be really grateful if you could complete and return to s.hammond@bathspa.ac.uk  the attached proposal form.  There’s also a little bit more information about how the days work included on the form.

I very much hope we can help your group in some way over the next year and I look forward to hearing from you.
